Baking is a great way to someone’s heart and here at the farmyard we teach we teach the skill of making a traditional loaf of brown bread. This time of year the autumn hedgerows of the farm provide the wonderful seasonal ingredients. Blackberries are a great addition to the classic apple crumble and give the dish a real autumnal feel. Check out our recipe below.
Ingredients
Crumble
- 100g Plain Flour
- 40g Porridge oats
- 60g Caster Sugar
- 75g Butter
- 50g Chopped Almonds (optional)
Filling
- 120g Blackberries
- 300g Apples
- Sugar, to sweeten
Method:
- Preheat oven to 190°C/375°F/Gas 5. Place the flour, sugar and oats into a bowl.
- Add butter and rub into the dry ingredients with tips of fingers to form a crumble and then stir in the chopped almonds, if using.
- Mix the blackberries and apples together and place in an ovenproof dish.
- Spread crumble over the fruit, then bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
- Serve hot with your choice of custard, cream or ice cream.
Tip: If the apples are cooking apples and not sweet eating apples it’s good to stew them a little first to take the bite out of them
To Stew Apples
- Peel, core and roughly chop apples.
- Place in a saucepan with a 30g butter and 30g of sugar and over a low heat; stir occasionally until apples are softened.
